GARDENDALE — It isn't very often that a middle school basketball coach makes news for changing schools.

But Chris Berry isn't your typical middle school hoops coach, thanks to his unorthodox style of uptempo play and swapping out players by platoon, a style that often left opponents (and referees) exhausted.

We'll now get to see if that style works on the varsity level, as Berry has taken the head boys' basketball coaching job at Tarrant High School. He made the announcement via an email message to The North Jefferson News late Friday night.

Berry has the head coach at Bragg Middle School for nine years. where hed led the Rockets to four Jefferson County championships. The frenetic pace of his teams lit up the scoreboard — the Rockets would often score more in 24 minutes of play than their varsity counterparts would in 32. Berry's overall record at Bragg was 147-58.

Berry also served as a commentator for the television broadcasts of the AHSAA state high school championship games last season.
