Baseball: Tabernacle Christian falls in ACEA state championship game

MONTEVALLO — The only loss that Tabernacle Christian’s baseball team suffered in Alabama Christian Education Association play was its worst, timing-wise.

The Torches’ pitching had major issues, handing out 11 walks as they fell to Tuscaloosa Christian 12-2 in six innings in Saturday’s state championship game.

“We just couldn’t find the strike zone,” Tabernacle coach Tim Thompson said. “It was just walk after walk after walk, and I probably wasn’t quick enough in pulling our starting pitcher.”

Jordan Forshee gave way to reliever C.J. White in the sixth with the bases loaded. He gave up two more walks and three consecutive hits, as the Warriors scored six runs to close out the game early.

“That’s the downside of a one-game final. I’ve begged for them to go to a double-elimination or best-of-three,” Thompson said.

The Torches led 2-1 after three innings, with Colin Sutton driving in a run in the third, and then scoring on an error. Tuscaloosa took the lead in the fourth, but still led by just two runs before piling on in the fifth and sixth.

Sutton was 2-for-3 for the game. Brian Thomas and Zach Morgan had the Torches’ other hits.

Tabernacle beat Victory Christian (Columbus, Miss.) 6-1 in the semifinal on Friday. Jason Wilson struck out seven Eagles batters and walked only one. Caleb Thompson was 2-for-4 at the plate, and Morgan hit a two-run double.

The Torches finished the season with a record of 18 wins, 3 losses and a tie, with their only conference loss coming in the state tournament finals.
