Mortimer Jordan’s girls track and field team finished ninth at last weekend’s AHSAA State Finals in Gulf Shores, and Fultondale’s boys did likewise at their championship meet in Selma.
It was Amanda Dean who racked up most of the team points for the Blue Devils, while Deundrea Marshall and ArDarius Stewart did all of the work for the Wildcats.
For Fultondale in Class 2A, Marshall nosed out Stewart by one hundredth of a second to take fourth in the 100-meter dash. Stewart took silver in the long jump with a 20 foot, 4 inch effort, just five inches behind winner Greg McLin of Tanner, and also took silver in the discus with a throw of 135 feet, 8 inches. Marshall won a silver medal in the 300-meter hurdles.
The Wildcats finished with 33 team points, with Tanner winning the team championship.
For Jordan, Dean placed second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.41 seconds. She was fifth in the 100-meter dash, and sixth in both the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash.
Tatiyana Blood also made the 100-meter hurdle finals, finishing just behind Dean in seventh place. Alyssa Amberson finished just out of the points with ninth place in the high jump.
The team finished with 20 points in the Class 5A standings, tied with J.O. Johnson. St. Paul’s Episcopal took the title.
For the Blue Devil boys, Eric Bennet took sixth place in the 100 hurdles, while Steven Swann was tied for eighth in the high jump, missing seventh in a jump-off. The 4-by-800-meter relay team also placed seventh.
Krista Stricklin was the lone Hayden athlete to score points, thanks to a fifth-place result in the Class 5A 800-meter run.
For the Corner boys, Casey Fuller won a bronze medal in the Class 4A pole vault with a height of 11 feet, 6 inches; he tied with Drew Thompson of Brooks. Zac Averhart was just out of the points in the discus with a ninth-place finish. The Yellow Jackets’ boys 4-by-400 relay team placed fourth, and the 4-by-800 team was fifth. The team finished 15th in the overall standings.
Corner’s Andrea Debord was seventh in the girls javelin with a throw of 99 feet, 5 inches.

Brooke Meadows' lead-off home run in the first inning held up as the only run of the game, as Hayden defeated Scottsboro 1-0 Saturday to win the AHSAA Class 5A state softball championship.
