PELHAM —
Tristan Castro scored on a 58-yard run two plays into the game, then set up another touchdown with a 30-yard run as Tabernacle Christian defeated Evangel Christian Alabaster 26-20 in non-conference eight-man football action Friday at Pelham High School.
Catsro’s TD came after the Torches recovered an onside kick on the opening kickoff. His setup run came on the very next possession, as Tabernacle started out quickly to take the momentum from the host Lightning.
Quarterback Caleb Lindsey connected with Colin Sutton on a 20-yard pass with 15 seconds left in the first half, as the Torches took a 20-7 lead to the break.
The teams battled back and forth through the third quarter, but tabernacle sealed the victory with seven minutes left, as Justin Sims pulled off a play-action fake and ran 30 yards for the touchdown.
Coach Wayne Dabbs said the quick start was they key to their win over a potent Lightning squad.
“We started so fast, and that gave us confidence going in. My biggest concern was our depth because of injuries, with several players out of position,” Dabbs said. “But our defense played really well early — and with a good team like Evangel, you need to.”
The game was played on a FieldTurf artificial surface, which caused some cramping issues for the Torches, Dabbs said.
The Lightning (1-1) had two touchdown receptions by Clay O’Neal, one in each half.
Tabernacle (3-0, 2-0 CFA) has next week off, then hosts Victory Christian-Columbus, Miss. in a key Christian Football Association test on Sept. 14.
