KIMBERLY —
Arab finished well clear of the field to win last weekend’s Mortimer Jordan Invitational, one of the last big tune-ups before sectional playoffs coming up next week.
The Arabian Knights finished with 218½ points, with Thompson second at 181 and Southside-Gadsden third at 178½. Pinson Valley was the top local team, placing fourth with 140½ points, just 8½ ahead of Jordan.
Center Point was eighth, Gardendale 10th and Hayden 11th.
The Blue Devils’ Devyn McCombs won his 152-lb. weight class, thanks to a 4-3 double overtime victory over Jamal Vaughns of Opelika in the finals. Trevor Barber just missed gold at 182, losing 1-0 to Zach Mann of Dora in the final bout. William Skinner was third at 160 with an overtime win in the consolation final.
For Pinson Valley, Christian Ramey placed second at 220, losing a 7-2 decision to Oak Mountain’s Lloyd Time. Patrick Tenney was third at 106, taking bronze over Jordan’s Braxton Worthington by medical forfeit. Hank Turner placed third at 126, Brandon Adams fourth at 170, and Malik Melton fourth at 195.
Hayden’s Hunter Flowers won the 120-lb. class, thanks to a 10-2 major decision over Clay Anthony of Thompson in the finals. Parker Sims finished third at 170.
Daniel Adkins of Gardendale kept his strong season going with first place in the heavyweight class, winning 6-2 over Austin Snyder of Southside in the finals. Brandon Roberts was fourth at 145, and Clay Sorenson fourth at 152 for the Rockets.

Hayden wins AHSAA 5A state softball championship
Brooke Meadows' lead-off home run in the first inning held up as the only run of the game, as Hayden defeated Scottsboro 1-0 Saturday to win the AHSAA Class 5A state softball championship.
