Girls basketball: Carbon Hill 55, Corner 47

CORNER —

An early wave of 3-pointers, followed by second chance opportunities and timely shots put Carbon Hill on the winning end of Friday night’s Class 4A Area 8 girls basketball game.

The visiting Bulldogs controlled Corner for the majority of the evening on their way to a 55-47 victory.

“We thought we could win the game and have a chance to tie for the area championship, but they got too many second chances,” said Corner coach Jeff Smith.

The Jackets found themselves down only seven after the opening period, despite Carbon Hill connecting on their first three attempts from downtown. Back-to-back threes from Jacket seniors Taylor Sloan and Carrissa Reeves in the final moments of the quarter brought the deficit to single digits.

Corner stayed hot in the second period with Abby Deason coming off the bench to score five points. The Jackets made their final four shots of the half to pull within two, 29-27.

The game was tight before a Bulldog freshman found her bite and did some serious damage. Abby Tittle squared-up from the right side, took the contact and buried a 3-pointer with the foul.

After completing the 4-point play, Tittle took it to the baseline for a backbreaking triple at the third quarter buzzer.

“[Tittle] obviously had a good game,” said Smith. “She mad some key shots at the end of the quarter.”

Tittle’s hot streak put Carbon Hill up 40-33 with eight minutes remaining.

Reeves did her best to please the home crowd. She served as a solid floor general for the Jackets on her way to 16 points. Andrea Debord and Avery Wakefield helped her down low with a combined 15 points and 14 rebounds.
