HAYDEN —

The Christmas holidays may be a time of celebration, but they are also a time of dread for high school wrestling coaches.

Pinson Valley coach Gene Richardson was concerned how his Indians would stay on pace over the holidays, and last week’s Chris Nunn Duals at Hayden was where he would find his fears confirmed, or his hopes upheld.

He’s feeling much better now, after Pinson defeated Fort Payne 50-27 in the tournament finals Saturday, completing an unbeaten run through the event.

“This was our stepping stone, to see how hard we worked over the holidays, and apparently we worked hard enough,” Richardson said. “Our kids were committed, and they were here every day we asked them to be. We started six freshmen [at this tournament], and I guess they did pretty good.”

The Indians got multiple pins by Patrick Tenney at 106 pounds and Barrett Crossley at heavyweight, who put his Mortimer Jordan opponent on his back in just 38 seconds in the semifinal match. Richardson switched Christian Ramey and Jonathan Dukes in and out at 220 pounds, and the twosome pinned every opponent they faced.

Pinson defeated the Blue Devils 44-30 in the semifinal match, which came down to a pin by Blake Treglown at 132 pounds, the last bout of the match.

In the third-place match, Jordan took down Hayden by a 58-22 score.

Dean McCombs recorded four pins at 152 pounds for the Devils. Hunter Flowers at 120 and Parker Sims at 170 also had multiple pins for the Wildcats.

The Indians move on to the Jefferson County Tournament this Friday and Saturday at Clay-Chalkville, where they are the defending champions.
