PINSON — Gardendale's boys golf team has won yet another Jefferson County Schools Championship, shooting a team score of 334 (46-over) at Cumberland Lakes Golf Course.
But the score that turned lots of heads was the one carded by Mortimer Jordan's Garrett Johnson, who breezed through the course with a 7-under 65. He was the individual medalist, a full 12 strokes clear of runner-up Michael Sandling of the Rockets.
"I told my guys we would need to shoot a 330 or better to beat his team," Gardendale coach Ryan Griffin said. "It's a good thing I was wrong."
Unfortunately for Johnson, his teammates weren't able to help him out, and the Blue Devils finished in third place with a 347 (59-over). Pinson Valley was second with a 54-over 342.
On the individual leaderboard, Dalton O'Rear of Clay-Chalkville was third with a 79, one shot behind Sandling. Connor Sullivan of the Indians and Tyler Simons tied for fourth with 82.
