Football: Corner 35, Sumiton Christian 7

SUMITON —

Corner finished off its regular season with a convincing 35-7 win at Sumiton Christian on Friday night.

Austin Sanford scored two touchdowns, one on a 22-yard run in the first minute of the second half and the other on an 18-yard pass play in the second quarter from quarterback Blake Byrd. It was Byrd’s second scoring pass of the night; his first came in the opening quarter on an 8-yard toss to Dylan Hand.

Deshay Averhart came up with a pick-six in the waning seconds of the first half when he intercepted an Eagles pass and ran it back 40 yards.

Both coaches sent in their second and third strings for most of the second half, which gave sophomore running back Taylor Crawford a chance to get on the stat sheet with a 10-yard touchdown run. Crawford ended up being the game’s leading rusher, as he gained 115 yards on 13 carries. Sanford ran 78 yards on eight attempts.

Nathan Godwin scored the only touchdown for Sumiton (3-7) when he recovered a fumble and ran it back 42 yards.

Troy Elliott was a perfect 4-for-4 on extra points. Cody Stevens made his only conversion kick of the night and the first of his varsity career.

Corner racked up 417 yards total offense, while holding the Eagles to just 108 yards. However, the Jackets turned the ball over six times — five fumbles and a Byrd interception.

Hunter Doppler led the Corner defense with 10 tackles and an interception, one of three picks on the night for the visitors. (Hand had the other.)

The victory gives the Jackets a 7-3 regular season record, winning their last six straight; it’s their best record since the 2006 season where they went two rounds deep into the playoffs. Speaking of the post-season, Corner moves on into the first round of Class 4A play when it travels to Dadeville next week.
