JeffCo Boys Basketball Tourney: Corner 56, Mortimer Jordan 39

CORNER — Defense is Corner's strong suit, and coach Billy Conner's squad played to its strength as it came away with a 56-39 victory over Mortimer Jordan in Friday's championship game of the Jefferson County Small Schools Girls Basketball Tournament.

After an even-played first quarter in which the teams traded opening runs, the Yellow Jackets turned up the pressure and took a 10-point advantage by halftime. They maintained that margin through most of the second half, and stretched it out near the end as the Blue Devils were forced to foul and send Corner to the free-throw line.

The Jackets also shut down Jordan's top scoring threat, two-guard Dalton Hudson, who had been averaging more than 17 points a game. Hudson was held to just five points, and was scoreless after intermission.

“Our kids and their kids are a lot alike. We just happened to shoot it better tonight,” Conner said. “But we defend well about every night – it depends on how well we shoot.”

Devils coach Lynn Elkins agreed. “That's the probably lowest point total we've had all year – probably since the last we played them,” he said.

(Indeed, the Jackets routed Jordan 62-35 back in November.)

Dillon McCaleb, named the tournament's most valuable player, led Corner with 14 points with three 3-pointers, and also grabbed six rebounds. He was the only player in the game to score in double figures. Drennen Hutchins added nine points.

Austin Merritt and Thomas Walker led the Devils with seven points each.

Dylan Hand and Dylan Adamson were also named to the all-tournament team for Corner, along with Merritt and Hudson for Jordan.

The two teams tangle again on Monday night, this time at Jordan.
