Football: Hope Christian 56, Tabernacle Christian 28

COLUMBIANA —

All good things must come to an end, and that’s exactly what happened to Tabernacle Christian’s 19-game winning streak.

The Torches had their lack of depth exploited by Hope Christian, as the home-schooler Eagles prevailed 56-28 in an eight-man football played at Cornerstone Christian School.

“We play 18 guys, and Hope dresses out 35, and in eight-man that’s a big difference,” Tabernacle coach Wayne Dabbs said. “The depth issues hit us tonight.”

Trsitan Castro scored twice for the Torches, on runs of 10 and 20 yards. He finished the night with 105 yards on 20 carries.

Caleb Lindsey threw two touchdown passes, one a 25-yard strike to JoJo Zassoda and another for 11 yards to Austin Bramlett. Lindsey was 8-for-12 for 105 yards.

Will Miller and Michael Cox each came up with interceptions, with Cox also recovering a Hope fumble.

Justin Sims ran six times for 69 yards in the first quarter, before he took a hard lick on a kickoff return and was taken out of the game.

“We need him to heal. We’ve got bigger fish to fry next week,” Dabbs said.

That would be the semifinals of the Christian Football Association playoffs next week, in which Tabernacle will host New Life Christian at Gardendale’s Noble Park. The winner will play the victor of the other semifinal between Tuscaloosa Christian and Victory Christian-Columbus, Miss. in the CFA finals on Nov. 2.
