Sara Beth Williamson hit a massive line drive home run over the right field fence, but teammate Chelsey Deloney did her one better, belting a mammoth shot over the scoreboard in left-center as Gardendale mauled Minor 15-0 in three innings, winning the Class 6A Area 11 softball championship Thursday afternoon.
Both Deloney and Williamson hit a double and a homer in their two at-bats in the second inning, during which the Rockets scored 11 runs. Williamson's homer came first and scored two runs, while her double drove in another; Deloney did the opposite, and also had a single in the first inning.
Bragan Burns was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Kristin Lange pitched the first inning Cris Gant the other two, facing the minimum nine Minor batters between them. Gant struck out four, but did allow a hit; the runner was thrown out at second trying to extend the play.
Gardendale will face the runner-up from Area 9 (Bessemer City, Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County and Northridge) in the first round of the North Central Regional at Liberty Park in Vestavia Hills. The game will be next Friday at 9:30 a.m.
