HARTSELLE — Mortimer Jordan rebounded from Tuesday's loss to top-ranked Curry with an extra-inning 2-0 win at fourth-ranked Hartselle on Wednesday.
After seven scoreless innings, Blue Devils pitcher Bailey Murphy scored the winning run when she hit a lead-off double, and then came home when Brooke Hill reached on an error. Brittany Collier knocked in an insurance run with an RBI single to right field.
It was another classic pitcher's duel, the type of game the No. 5 Devils have found themselves in several times this season. Murphy went all eight innings and struck out 13 Tiger batters, giving up just three hits. She never had more than one runner on base at a time, and no Hartselle runner got past second base.
Tigers starting pitcher Hope Cain struck out seven in five innings, but Jordan put eight runners on base against her. Reliever Jade Hays fanned five in three innings, but was tagged with the loss.
Devils center fielder Shelby Maze was 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles. Murphy was walked three times before her double in the final inning.
Hannah Jenkins' double in the sixth was the Tigers' only extra-base hit.
The Devils (14-8) take part in the Bob Jones Tournament in Madison this weekend.
