HAYDEN — Top-seeded Hayden thumped Curry 64-25 in the first round of the Class 5A Area 14 girls basketball tournament, and will advance to the championship Saturday against rival Mortimer Jordan.

It was a big night for junior center Katie Parr, who reached an important career milestone — Parr grabbed her 1,000th rebound of her career.

But a big reason for the Wildcats’ success came way of freshman guard Grayson Taylor and her 6-for-8 three-point shooting clinic. Taylor dropped five of her high-arcing triples in the first half to give Hayden a comfortable 32-12 lead.

“Grayson hit three threes in a row for us and that set the tone,” said coach John Simmons. “Then we were able to settle down and use our interior play. That was our biggest advantage.”

Taylor finished with 20 points on the night.  Parr recorded another double-double, muscling her way to 14 points and 12 rebounds. She now has 1,001 career boards.

Hayden will host Jordan on Saturday at 3 p.m. for the area 14 title.

Simmons expressed his concerns for some new wrinkles that Jordan coach Kelsey Treadaway has implemented for the tournament.

“Me and the [assistant] coach are going to stay tonight and watch some film to come up with a new game plan [for Saturday],” said Simmons.
