FINE-GONE: Paul Finebaum off the air at WJOX

BIRMINGHAM — If you're looking for your daily dose of all things SEC, as well as the rants of regular callers like Tammy, I-man, Legend and Charles Allen Head, you'll be having problems Tuesday, and some time to come.

Sports-talk radio giant Paul Finebaum's syndicated show was yanked off the air at WJOX on Tuesday, where he has called home for the last six years. His contract with the station expired Monday. The time slot is being filled by "The JOX Roundtable," who previously ran in the midday time period.

Finebaum has been battling in the courts with WJOX owner Citadel Broadcasting for some time, in a dispute over his contract. Meanwhile, Cox Media Group of Atlanta, which owns rival station 97.3 The Zone (which is licensed to Gardendale), has been trying to woo Finebaum to their station in anticipation of the expiring contract.

Finebaum's show is heard nationally on SiriusXM satellite radio, as well as on a network of stations throughout the Deep South. WJOX is the third station where his show has called home; it began on WAPI-AM, then moved to WERC in 1993, and then to WJOX in 2007.

Finebaum began his media career locally as a reporter and columnist for the old Birmingham Post-Herald. Not long before that paper folded, he moved his column to The Press-Register in Mobile, where it was syndicated to other papers, including The North Jefferson News. He discontinued his column two years ago, though he has written columns for Sports Illustrated since.

Finebaum has been mum abut his broadcast future, though sports blogger Clay Travis is reporting that Finebaum will end up at 97.3 The Zone after a three-month no-compete clause runs out.

Finebaum is scheduled to be the featured speaker at the Greater Gardendale Chamber of Commerce banquet Thursday night at the Gardendale Civic Center. Tickets are $20 each and available at the chamber office on Moncrief Road.
