CENTER POINT —
Gabrielle Holston did most of her damage in the first half. By then, she was just about done, and so was Pinson Valley.
The 6-foot-1 senior forward scored all but two of her 13 points in the first half, as second-ranked Center Point soared past the Indians 54-45 in girls basketball action Friday..
Center Point began playing backups early in the second half and by the fourth quarter, the floor was full of Eagle youngsters.
“I played my young kids, I played sophomores,” said Center Point coach Ulysses Haynes.
The first-team Indians scored 15 in the final period to cut it to a nine-point margin.
“I rested my starters and I wasn’t worried too much,” said Haynes. “This was a good learning experience for my young kids as we try to win a state title.”
The Eagles possessed control of the floor through three quarters. The home team took a commanding 46-30 lead into the final eight minutes of the contest.
Alex Lowery and Destini McKinney combined for nearly half of Pinson's 45 points. Lowery pulled in 14 rebounds and McKinney dished out six assists.
Center Point moves to a 12-3 overall record along with a 5-0 area mark, and all but clinches the regular-season area championship. Pinson falls to 4-10, and 1-2 in area play.
