CORNER — Mark Louis hit two free throws with 28.2 seconds remaining to break a tie and give Mortimer Jordan a 44-42 win over Class 4A No. 10 Locust Fork in the championship game of the Corner Christmas boys basketball tournament Saturday night.
With the game tied at 42-42, the Blue Devils point guard was fouled going to the basket, then stepped to the foul line and sank both shots.
Both teams struggled from the floor, especially in the third period when they scored just 12 points between them, but were whistled for 14 fouls. For the first time all season, Jordan did not hit a 3-point shot.
Louis led all scorers for the Devils with 11 points, eight of which came in the fourth period and six of those coming in eight attempts at the foul line. Ben Hardiman added 10 points for the Devils (13-1).
Clay Smith and Dillon Burton each scored nine for the Hornets (11-4).
Both teams are off until Jan. 3, when Jordan plays Ragland at St. Clair County and Locust Fork takes on Briarwood Christian.
Third-place game — Corner 55, Hanceville 46: The host team was up 32-15 at halftime and remained in control throughout. Blake Byrd led the Yellow Jackets with 22 points and Austin Sanford scored 11.
Brontae Harris had 20 points and Chris Smith 13 for the Bulldogs.
Seventh-place game — Hayden vs. West Blocton: The game was not played, as West Blocton backed out due to a conflict.
