It was jamboree night for AHSAA high school football teams, as coaches get their last chance to tune their teams before play begins for real next week. Here's how local teams fared tonight — and per longstanding policy, we're reporting only the scores from the varsity portions of jamborees:
Gardendale 10, Mortimer Jordan 10, two quarters of play: Juan Jackson scored on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Crook, and Sam Peacock kicked a 22-yard field goal for the Rockets. Landon Smith scored on a 42-yard run, and Devlin Hodges kicked a 32-yard field goal, the first of his career, for the Blue Devils .Hodges was 14-20 passing for 175 yards. Freshman wide receiver Trey Peters caught five passes for 72 yards, and defensive end Austin Merritt recorded six tackles for the Blue Devils. (We didn't receive stats from the Rockets.)
Hewitt-Trussville 10, Pinson Valley 2, two quarters: The Indians scored late in second quarter on a safety. Running back Nick Gibson was held out to rest up from some dings to his shoulder in practice; he'll be used next week against Oneonta.
Corner 21, Hanceville 13 in the first two quarters; Corner 7, Brookwood 0 in the second two quarters: Chase Best had touchdown passes of 46 and 20 yard to Dylan Adamson against Hanceville, and Josh Sanford scored on a 7-yard run against Brookwood.
Locust Fork 14, Hayden 0 in one quarter of play: The Hornets took advantage of a Wildcat fumble on their first play, and Micah Stephens scored on a 4-yard run four plays later. He did so again later, after being set up by a 58-yard pass from Kyle Hornbuckle to Josh Tawbush.
Fultondale 35, Tarrant 13 in four 8-minute quarters: No other info available yet.
