BASKETBALL: Hayden boys finally crack goose egg
— Hayden’s boys basketball team finally got their first win in their last regular-season game of the year, thanks to players called up from the JV squad.
Will Scott’s 3-pointer with 6.3 seconds to go broke a 77-77 tie with visiting Fultondale at halftime, paving the way to a 82-77 win Monday.
Fultondale had been down by nine at the half, with big men Christian McCollough and Dre Talley in foul trouble much of the game.
Scott finished with 20 points and five 3-pointers. Seth Aderhold had 16 points with three treys. Casey Speakman also scored 16, and was 8-for-8 at the foul line.
Talley led Fultondale with 21 points. Quantez McGary scored 17, with five 3-pointers.
Pinson Valley 57, Gardendale 55: After taking a big lead early, the Indians had to fend off a late charge by the Rockets on Monday.
Dallas Tidwell hit a trey with 6.4 seconds left, but the Rockets weren’t able to get the ball back afterward.
KD Gunnerson led the Rockets with 17 points, including three treys, and had 11 rebounds. Tidwell had 14 with a pair of threes, and Zach Snow hit three treys on his way to 13 points.
Fultondale 68, Susan Moore 58: Christian McCollough led the Cats with 27 points and 12 rebounds on Tuesday. Dre Talley scored 11 and Deundrea Marshall 10.
GIRLS
Pinson Valley 55, Gardendale 54: Hope Woods hit one of two free throws with 2.1 seconds left to break a 54-54 tie Monday night.
Haley Hardman had 15 points and Kasey Jones scored 13 for the Rockets.
Hayden 79, Fultondale 21: Hayden scored the first 21 points of the game Monday, en route to a school-record 26th victory of the year.
Krista Stricklin had 21 points, Segan Bryant and Mallory Ray put in 14 each, and Anna Shelton added 10.
Molly Brown led Fultondale with five points.

It was a subdued clubhouse for a normally raucous Mortimer Jordan softball team, after finding out that longtime Blue Devils “superfan” Jerry Motte had lost his long battle with cancer.
