VESTAVIA HILLS — Gardendale went two and out in the Class 6A baseball playoffs Friday, as Vestavia Hills swept the Rockets in a first-round doubleheader thanks to the hitting of Garrett LaBarge.
The Rebels won the first game 4-0, and the second 4-2 in eight innings.
LaBarge hit home runs in both games, but it was the second that proved to be the nail in Gardendale’s coffin, with a two-run blast in the eighth that sent the Rockets packing.
He was 2-for-3 in the opening game with a three-run homer and a single, as Vestavia scored all four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Schaefer Amos added a run-scoring double.
Rebel pitchers held Gardendale batters to a combined eight hits. Parker Blaylock allowed three hits and three walks in the opener, while Carter Jacobs went all eight innings in the nightcap, giving up five hits and four bases on balls.
Joseph Calvert accounted for all of the Rockets’ scoring for the day, thanks to his two-run triple in the bottom of the first inning in the second game. Chris Blakey was 2-for-4, and scored on Calvert’s triple; Zakk Morton was 2-for-2.
Blakey, Hunter Crook and Seth Alford had Gardendale’s three singles in the opener.
Carter Burns (7-3) took the loss on the mound in the first game, with five hits, three walks and four earned runs. Chris Walton was the losing pitcher in the late game, with seven hits, three walks and two strikeouts; all four runs were earned.
Gardendale finishes the season with a 20-13 record.
