PREP BASKETBALL:Hayden girls advance to Blount County finals
— Hayden made it look easy as they rolled to an early 30-10 lead, going on to take a 59-34 victory over Susan Moore in the semifinals of the Blount County Tournament at Oneonta.
Krista Stricklin had 21 points, Mallory Ray scored 14 and Sam Niblett put in 10 for the Wildcats (22-2), who play Locust Fork in the finals Saturday night.
In other girls’ games:
Mortimer Jordan 49, Corner 26: Brianna Nation’s 15 points paced the Blue Devils, who dominated the game from the start. Haylie McCleney added 14 points, and Peyton Davis had 11 points plus six blocks.
Preslie Cruce and Kayla Estes led Corner with eight points each.
Shades Mountain Christian 43, Fultondale 30: Abbey Wainwright scored 18 points as the Eagles took control in the fourth quarter in an area game Thursday.
Jakayla Pollard led the Wildcats with nine points.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Mortimer Jordan 60, Corner 52: The Devils’ pressure started to gel in the second quarter, as they overcame a seven-point deficit.
“There were no magic X’s and O’s. The kids just turned up the intensity, got on a roll and it fed on itself,” said MoJo coach Daniel Foy.
“We knew what they were going to do to us, and practiced for it all week. But you’ve still got to step up and do it,” Corner coach Billy Conner said.
Jamey Hammock led Jordan (13-11) with 18 points and nine rebounds. Daniel Swope added 10.
Seth Hand scored 14 for the Yellow Jackets (11-14).
No. 9 Shades Mountain Christian 67, Fultondale 59: The Wildcats stayed within shouting distance until the very end, despite four three-pointers from guard Quantez McGary as part of his 18-point effort for the Wildcats on Thursday.
Christian McCollough also scored 18 for the Cats.
Vestavia Hills 50, Gardendale 40: The second quarter doomed the Rockets, as the Rebels outscored them 18-9 in an area game Friday. KD Gunnerson led Gardendale with 14 points, and Zack Snow added 10.
Covenant Christian 38, Tabernacle Christian 35: Wes Felix led the Torches with 12 points, as a fourth-quarter comeback try fell short Tuesday.

Parker has 10 K’s as Blue Devils roll
It was a subdued clubhouse for a normally raucous Mortimer Jordan softball team, after finding out that longtime Blue Devils “superfan” Jerry Motte had lost his long battle with cancer.
