All good things must come to an end, and so it has for Krista Stricklin —at least at the high school level.
The Hayden senior guard played her last game in a Wildcat uniform, as visiting No. 4 Cullman prevailed 60-47 in a AHSAA Class 5A sub-regional playoff Thursday.
Stricklin, who now is ninth on the state’s all-time career scoring list, scored 31 points including five 3-pointers. But that wasn’t enough to overcome the Bearcats’ strong post play, which they used for numerous back-door cuts, plus an 82-percent night at the foul line.
“It’s like the other day Coach [John] Simmons was handing me a jersey and telling me I was going to start as a 12-year-old seventh-grader, and now it’s done,” Stricklin said.
Forwards Morgan Smith and Morgan Pitts led Cullman with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Jordan Quick added 11.
Grayson Taylor, playing her first game after a trip to Australia the week before for a family funeral, scored eight points for the sixth-ranked Wildcats (27-4).
No. 7 Bessemer City 56, Gardendale 33: At Bessemer, the Rockets were no match for the Purple Tigers, who pulled away after halftime.
Mallorie Corbin led the Rockets with 10 points.
Gardendale finishes with an 8-17 season record.
No. 5 A.P. Brewer 75, Mortimer Jordan 47: At Somerville, the Blue Devils surrendered an early 13-8 lead, but were down by just six points at intermission.
But the Patriots stepped on the gas after the break as they rolled to an easy win.
Haylie McCleney led all scorers with 23 points in her last game for Jordan. Alysa Amberson and Megan Snow added 10 points each.
Riley Northway led Brewer (28-3) with 14 points, Courtney Oldacre had 12, Malerie Drinkard had 11 and Cheyenne McLemore had 10.
BOYS
Priceville 52, Corner 38: At Priceville, Blake Byrd and Austin Sanford account for all but six of the Yellow Jackets' points, which was not a good thing as they were beaten by No. 3 Priceville on the road.
Sanford scored 18 and Byrd 14 for Corner.
