Mortimer Jordan’s boys came up just short in the season-opening cross country meet, beaten by Center Point by four points at Pinson Valley last week. The Blue Devils placed four runners in the top 10, but the Eagles had two of the top three to win the meet with 37 points.
Luis Gonzalez won the race on his home course with a time of 17:46 over the 5,000 meters. Gatlin Holland was Jordan’s top finisher in fourth.

Corner sweeps Fultondale: Middle hitter Andrea Debord had six kills and 10 aces as the Yellow Jackets routed the host Wildcats 25-5, 25-12, 25-9 on Monday. Cheyenne Bryant added six aces for Corner (5-6).
Torches split: Tabernacle Christian lost to Lindsay Lane Academy of Athens 25-15, 25-15, 22-25, 25-9, then swept Flint Hill Christian 25-13, 25-17, 25-15 last week. Elizabeth Osborne has seven kills at Lindsay Lane and five again Flint Hill.

Hayden wins AHSAA 5A state softball championship
Brooke Meadows' lead-off home run in the first inning held up as the only run of the game, as Hayden defeated Scottsboro 1-0 Saturday to win the AHSAA Class 5A state softball championship.
