BIRMINGHAM —
Tareek Spears connected with Devonta Savage on a 6-yard touchdown pass with 18.4 seconds to play, as Woodlawn pulled off a 27-23 upset over Gardendale Friday night at Lawson Field.
The loss came after the Rockets had staged a comeback of their own, overcoming a 6-point first half deficit on a 5-yard scoring run by Lovell Jordan with three seconds remaining before halftime, putting Gardendale up 21-20 at the break.
The Rockets added two more points when the Colonels fell on a fumbled snap in their own end zone for a safety midway through the third period.
Gardendale opened the scoring four minutes into the game when Juan Jackson ran in from the 7.
Spears countered with a 12-yard touchdown run of his own early in the second quarter, but the extra point was no good.
Rocket coach Chris Fancher called a halfback option on their next drive, which resulted in a 31-yard touchdown pass from Jesse Blackburn to Chris Blakey with 8:48 left in the half.
The Colonels answered with a similar play, as Savage threw to Cody Daughtry for 37 yards just over two minutes later. The two-point conversion failed.
After holding off the Rockets on the next possession, Woodlawn took the lead on a 34-yard pass from Spears to Daughtry with 2:29 left before intermission. The tandem connected on the two-point conversion to give the Colonels a 20-14 advantage.
Spears was 11-for-18 for 164 yards in passing, with Daughtry catching six for 143 yards and two TDs for Woodlawn (2-0, 1-0 region).
Jordan gained 120 yards rushing on 18 carries for the Rockets (1-1, 0-1). Hunter Crook completed 9 passes in 16 attempts for 92 yards. Blakey Blackburn and Gabe Hill had three receptions each.
