WEST BLOCTON, Ala. —
Blake Byrd threw two touchdown passes to lead Corner to a 14-9 victory over West Blocton, giving new Yellow Jackets coach Zac Willis his very first win.
Byrd hit Kerry Smith with a 63-yard strike on the third play of their opening drive of the game. He also found Matt Vatani with a 6-yard touchdown pass with 4:56 left in the game to break a 7-7 tie.
The pass to Vatani finished off a marathon drive for Corner which took 15 plays to cover 60 yards.
Montez Brown had leveled the score for the Tigers (0-2, 0-1 region) with a 2-yard run with 4:49 left in the third quarter.
The Jackets (1-1, 1-0) conceded a safety by running the ball out the back of the end zone with 21 seconds left.
Byrd was 9-for-13 in passing for the night with one interception and 133 yards. He was also Corner’s leading rusher with 71 yards on 19 carries.
Smith caught six passes for 86 yards, and also intercepted Tiger quarterback Hershel Freeman late to end a scoring threat at the 12-yard line.
Jake Averhart had 13 tackles for the Jackets.
Brown ran for 134 yards on 26 carries for West Blocton. Freeman was 4-for-13 with the Smith pickoff, gaining 45 yards.
