Commission sells county nursing home, funds assurance bond for landfills

BIRMINGHAM — The Jefferson County Commission voted Thursday to sell the facility informally known as the county nursing home, located just east of Fultondale.

The Jefferson Rehabilitation Health Center, as it is formally named, is being sold to Tara Jane LLC. That company plans to keep the facility open; it currently houses 29 patients and employs 80. The sale price is $2.95 million.

The facility is located on Black Creek Road in the Ketona neighborhood.

The commission also voted to set up a $7 million fund to assure the proper operation of its landfills, to comply with state law. The county had previously funded the requirement itself, but with the ongoing Chapter 9 bankruptcy proceedings, that was not sufficient for compliance.

Jefferson County farmed out operation of the two landfills to Santek Environmental in 2006. That company now runs the Mt. Olive Landfill off Mary Buckelew Parkway and the Turkey Creek Landfill near Pinson, plus a transfer facility near Bessemer.
