Fultondale council makes donations to schools

FULTONDALE — Fultondale High School students got a lesson in government this week, hand-delivered to them by the Fultondale City Council.

Once a year, the city council holds a meeting at the high school in order to let students witness government in action.

A small auditorium at the school was packed to capacity on Monday as students, teachers, city officials and guests attended a city council meeting.

The meeting started with presentations of numerous awards to students, and with announcements of donations to schools.

The city of Fultondale donated $18,000 to Fultondale High School and $31,000 to Fultondale Elementary School; each school received $35 per student enrolled. Also, the city donated $10,000 to the Fultondale High School athletics department.

In addition, the city recognized Chili’s with an Excellence in Community Support award.

In city business, the council placed a moratorium for 180 days on the issuance of any permits for new construction in the area adjacent to the shopping center, which is near the spot where the former Fultondale Elementary School stood. Many homes in that area were damaged or destroyed by a tornado that struck Fultondale in April 2011.

In the meantime, the planning commission will review the existing zoning and make recommendations to the city council.

The area is currently zoned R-3 (residential) and the city is considering rezoning it to commercial.

“Anyone who wants to build back has had ample time,” said Fultondale Mayor Jim Lowery.

He said the city currently has no plans for the area.

The council also authorized Lowery to proceed with the application process for the city to initiate the rezoning process with the planning commission.

In other business, the council:

• appointed Jeff Robinson to the Commercial Development Authority to replace Keith Brooke, whose term expires March 15

• declared 10 used vehicles as surplus property and authorized the city clerk to place them for sale on govdeals.com

• changed council meeting dates because of conflicts with training conferences. The March 11 meeting is moved to March 4 at 6 p.m., and the March 25 meeting is moved to March 18 at 11:30 a.m.
