FULTONDALE —
Patrons of the Fultondale Public Library have until next week to check out materials, for awhile at least.
Employees are halting circulation on Tuesday in preparation for the library’s move to its new location near Winn-Dixie on Decatur Highway.
Borrowers then will have about three weeks to get materials turned back in so library staff can conduct a massive inventory of every item, including books, movies and all audio material.
Assistant director Jessica Allen said the staff hopes that patrons understand and will be patient during the transition.
In the meantime, the library will remain open during normal business hours for patrons who need to use computers, fax machines, copiers or printers. Through March 15, the library will also still accept books that are placed on hold from other libraries and sent to Fultondale for pickup.
People can also use our facility to read or study, they just can’t check out any of materials belonging to the Fultondale library.
“When we stop circulation and have the entire inventory in place, we will go through the books and weed out old or damaged books,” Allen said. “We will box everything that is going to the new library.”
After purging out old books, the library will host a big book sale open to the public.
The library currently has about 27,000 books, movies and CDs on inventory.
The staff will primarily weed out nonfiction books for adults and youth in order to update that material, Allen said.
A moving company will relocate all of the library materials after the staff has boxed all items.
The new library was set to be completed on March 3, but the date has been pushed to later in March due to excessive rain.
An opening date for the new facility has not been set. It will have more space and more amenities. There will be 20 computers available to the public, while the existing library has eight public computers.
Allen said the library is still planning to host its popular summer reading program.
