Council enlists company to sell Gardendale City Center space

GARDENDALE — Gardendale this week authorized an exclusive listing agreement with a company to sell or lease property at the future city center development.

The city council chose Eyster Properties Inc. to market the space, which city leaders said will include retail space, more restaurants (Buffalo Wild Wings recently opened there), a movie theater and a hotel.

The 22-acre site is on Mt. Olive Road next to Gardendale Elementary School.

In another measure, the city also authorized Mayor Othell Phillips to solicit bids for a greenway at the city center.

In other business, the council:

• authorized a severe weather preparedness sales tax holiday weekend on Feb. 22-24

• adopted a resolution urging all eligible Gardendale residents to maintain firearms and ammunition for their personal and family protection

• designated the authorized depositories for city funds and to designate the officers and employees authorized to deposit and withdraw city funds

• announced that the Gardendale Historical Society will occupy the former North Jefferson News building near the Gardendale Civic Center. A councilman said the city has gotten permits to connect the city sewer to the building

• reclassified Sherry Baggett to the position of magistrate and promoted her to magistrate supervisor, following the retirement of Barbara Cobb

• promoted Garrett Mealer from part-time laborer to full-time laborer in the parks and recreation department

• declared a police vehicle as surplus and agreed to donate it to Jefferson State Community College

• announced an open house at the Gardendale Safety Center on Jan. 24.
