NJN/am for Thursday, December 12

Good Thursday to you all…

Weather: Warming trend. We will start to warm up ever so slightly today, with highs in the upper 50s today and the lower 60s Friday. Lows tonight will be in the middle 30s. Rain moves in on Saturday and Sunday.

Chain of tips leads to Warrior meth lab. An arrest of a man at a recycling business led to a tip about two meth labs, one of which panned out for Jefferson County Sheriff’s investigators. The remains of an out-of-use meth lab were found near Morris, after two people arrested on Gobblers Nob Road near Warrior gave deputies further information. The old lab was found on Sardis Road. Deputies arrested Chastity Nicole Jones of Warrior on several outstanding drug-related warrants, and James Michael Hodges of Gardendale for providing a false ID. Other charges may result from this case.

Robber nabbed in Center Point. Sheriff’s deputies arrested Curtis Williams on Tuesday at his home in the robbery of a payday-loan store on U.S. 78 in Forestdale. The robbery took place around 2 p.m.; employees recognized Williams but not his accomplice, who remains at large. Williams is held without bond in the county jail; he was wanted on several outstanding warrants.

Sports: Hornets remain in top 10. Locust fork stays in 10th place in the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Class 4A girls basketball rankings. Undefeated Hayden was just outside the top 10 in Class 5A. On the boys side, the Hornets were also just below the top 10… Football: Alabama sixth? Well, that’s one man’s opinion — of the top football programs in the country, pro or college. That’s the word from writer Gene Wojciechowski of ESPN.com. The Green Bay Packers topped the list, followed by the University of Texas. Of the Tide, Wojciechowski said: “You [the coach] are given every tool in the box to win. If you do, you become a coaching icon (and very, very rich), as [Nick] Saban has become. If you don't, you become an appetizer on Paul Finebaum's radio show.”
