NJN/am for Wednesday, December 12

Wednesday is Hump Day, in case you hadn’t heard…

Weather: Brisk. Sunny skies for today, but high temperatures will only reach the middle 50s, and lows tonight will drop to the middle 30s. Thursday will be a carbon copy.

North Korea tests a rocket. The communist country appears to have successfully fired a three-stage rocket. The rocket was tracked going over the island of Okinawa, and apparently reached orbit before landing in the Yellow Sea. It’s the first successful test for North Korea, which has been warned repeatedly not to engage in such weapon-building by the United States and China.

Major departure. Kimberly City Council member and mayor pro tem Brad Stark will take a leave of absence from the council for a year. Stark, a major with the National Guard, will deploy overseas with his unit. Donnie Gooch has been selected to fill in for Stark on the council. Stark was given a Bible as a going-away present by Mayor Bob Ellerbrock and the rest of the council in their regular session Tuesday.

Sports: Cowboys remember. Jerry Brown, the Dallas Cowboys player who died in a car crash last weekend, was memorialized in a private service for the team Tuesday. Among those in attendance was Josh Brent, the driver of the car in which Brown died, who is charged with intoxication manslaughter for allegedly driving after drinking… Prep basketball: Sarah Rickles hit a jump shot with four seconds left to lift Mortimer Jordan past Walker 54-53 in a girls Class 5A area game Tuesday. Center Megan Snow had a triple-double, with 17 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks. In other girls games, Hayden blasted Curry and Gardendale defeated Carver. In boys action, Gardendale edged Carver, Hayden fell to Curry after a controversial play at game’s end, and Jordan blasted Walker.
