Runoff election Tuesday for District 34 House seat

Voters in much of Blount County and a small part of northern Jefferson County will go to the polls Tuesday to elect a new state representative.

It's a Republican runoff election for the House District 34 seat, which was vacated when Elwyn Thomas resigned to take over the chairmanship of the Alabama Manufactured Housing Commission.

The candidates are David Standridge of Hayden, the former Blount County probate judge and chairman of the county commission, who retired from both positions to run for this seat; and Chris Latta, a member of the Blount County Board of Education, who lives in Straight Mountain.

District 34 includes the Blount County communities of Hayden, Smoke Rise, Locust Fork, Remlap, Oneonta and Allgood among others, as well as Corner in Jefferson County.

Because no candidate registered to run as a Democrat, Tuesday's election is the de facto general election.
