Weather: Rain rolls away. A few clouds will remain, but no more rain today, and highs will reach the lower 70s. Still cloudy tonight with lows in the lower 50s. More of the same tomorrow,.

Murder-suicide in Vestavia Hills. The owner of a popular pizza place in Homewood has apparently killed his elderly mother, then turned the gun on himself. David Morrison, 59, and his 96-year-old mother were both found dead in their home Wednesday morning. Morrison owned and operated Dave’s Pizza for the last dozen years.

Parade time tonight. The annual Gardendale Christmas Parade steps off tonight at 6 p.m. It will follow the usual path through the streets of the downtown area.

Sports: Malzahn sends Chizik’s staff packing. New Auburn coach Gus Malzahn told what remains of the previous coaching staff that they will not be retained. Malzahn met with the handful of Gene Chizik assistants who stayed on after their old boss was fired by the university. Meanwhile, Malzahn is in the midst of finding his new coordinators, with the website reporting that Ellis Johnson, the former head coach at Southern Miss, will be the new defensive coordinator. Johnson was previously the DC at Alabama; he was fired after one season at Hattiesburg, where his team was winless… Louisville head coach Charlie Strong has decided to turn down the job at Tennessee and stay with the team. The Cardinals spent most of the year in the top 10 of the polls, and will play in the Sugar Bowl against Florida… Pro basketball: Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant became the fifth player in NBA history to reach the 30,000-point career milestone, scoring the historic bucket last night in New Orleans. He’s the youngest player to reach that plateau. The others in the 30K Club: Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone.
