GARDENDALE — Students at Gardendale High School are reaching out to help those in need.

The Student Council is again raising funds for its annual Christmas Visions program, with this year’s goal set at $24,000.

“We’re collecting money and raising money for underprivileged kids in the area,” said Student Council member Kelsey Brumbeloe.

GHS students donate coins for the project, and the Student Council is also collecting donations from individuals and businesses in the community.

School counselors throughout north Jefferson County submit names and a list of needs to Christmas Visions. There is also a separate list for “wants.”

“We go and shop for them and we complete their lists,” Brumbeloe said. Student Council members then sort and organize the gifts and deliver them to the various schools, where they are in turn taken to the families.

This is Brumbeloe’s first year as a Student Council member, and her first year to work with Christmas Visions.

“I’ve heard all about it, so I’m excited,” she said. “I think the biggest thing for me will be seeing what these kids don’t have, what they’re asking for.”

In the past, children have asked for items like socks, jackets, toothbrushes and other hygiene items. Organizers many of children participating in the program have deep needs and benefit greatly from the gifts.

“It will make Christmas very rewarding for me,” Brumbeloe said. “On Christmas morning, they will have something under their tree from Santa.”

In addition to collecting donations, the students are conducting fund-raisers. They are selling T-shirts with a logo that states, “give love, give hope, give back.”

They are also hosting a parents’ night out on Dec. 7, 5-9 p.m., where parents can drop the kids off for a few hours of shopping or for a date. All proceeds benefit Christmas Visions.
