MORRIS —
Police are searching for two men who were caught on camera robbing a north Jefferson bank at gunpoint.
The robbery at Peoples Bank of Alabama happened at 12:20 p.m. today.
Morris Police Chief Brian Cochran said one of the suspects was wearing sunglasses and a face mask, and the other wore a hoodie and had his face covered.
Both men were brandishing hand guns.
“The suspects herded the three employees behind the counter and took an undetermined amount of cash from the vault,” said Cochran.
They left the scene in what was most likely a silver or gray Dodge Charger. The vehicle tag, probably a dealership tag, was white with red lettering, Cochran said.
He said it is not known which direction the suspects headed after leaving the bank.
Cochran said investigators have collected physical evidence and are following leads.
“This is an unusual crime to occur here,” Cochran said. “The last robbery we had was two years ago, and those suspects were caught in 12 hours.” In that incident, the Dollar General store in Morris was robbed.
“We’re going to devote all of our time to this and put these people in prison,” Cochran said.
None of the bank employees were injured in today’s incident.
“That was the most important thing to us,” Cochran said.
Peoples Bank of Alabama spokesmen at the main branch in Cullman were unavailable to say when the Morris bank would re-open.
Cochran is asking for the public’s help in the investigation, which is being handled jointly by the Morris Police Department and the FBI.
The FBI and the Gardendale Police Department assisted in the initial investigation. The Warrior Police Department also had a car at the scene shortly after the incident.
Anyone with any information on the robbery is asked to call the police department at (205) 647-0597.
