Last sentence in Kimberly corruption case. According to court records, a federal judge in Huntsville sentenced Christopher Adam McGraw to nine months of prison time plus three years of probation for his role in illegal gambling operations in Kimberly, plus the bribery of then-mayor Craig Harris. He’ll also pay a $5,000 fine. McGraw is the last of six defendants to be indicted in the investigation, which featured Harris secretly recording them offering or paying him bribes to keep the city’s police away from houses where electronic gambling machines were operating. All six reach plea deals with federal prosecutors.
Soldier sentenced for leaking secrets. PFC Bradley Manning will serve 35 years in military prison. The sentence was handed down by a military judge at Fort Meade, Md. on Wednesday. Manning was convicted of charges related to his giving classified documents to the WikiLeaks organization, in what has been called the biggest leak of intelligence data in the country’s history. Manning got 3½ years credit for time served.
Sports: Bad break. The good news is that the Atlanta Braves won 4-1 over the New York Mets on Wednesday. The bad news is that outfielder Jason Heyward suffered a broken jaw after he was hit by a fastball from Mets pitcher Jonathan Niese. Heyward will be out from four to six weeks, the club says. It hasn’t been a good year for the Braves, injury-wise: Atlanta Journal-Constitution writer Jeff Schultz reminds us that five other players have suffered season-ending injuries. Meanwhile, back home at Regions Field, the Barons saw why Javier Baez is a top prospect in the Chicago Cubs farm system. He belted two homers in a 10-8 win by the Tennessee Smokies. Birmingham has lost six of their last seven games.
