Car-tracking device helps deputies arrest carjackers

WYLAM — Two men have been arrested for carjacking, after Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies used a tracking device used in one of the cars to track them down.

Eric Washington Jr., 23, of Center Point and Demarques King, 30, of McDonald's Chapel were both charged with attempted murder, first-degree robbery and two counts of receiving stolen property. The pair were found at a home in Wylam after deputies used the tracking device — a common brand name is Lojack, though they didn't specify which brand was used — to find one of the cars the two are charged with stealing.

The sheriff's office charges the two men with a carjacking in Fairfield on Valley Road, near the main entrance of the U.S. Steel Fairfield Works. The suspects are accused of firing shots at the driver, then stealing a Chrysler 300 early Thursday morning. It was this car which contained the tracking device.

Another vehicle was carjacked about an hour later, this one a Chevy Impala along Minor Parkway between Wylam and Adamsville. Shots were fired in this incident as well.

Deputies found the suspects in Wylam on Loop Road. One was removing wheels from the Chrysler 300, while the other was sitting in another car. Deputies also found the stolen Impala, as well as a Nissan used by the suspects; that car had been reported stolen from Forestdale in August.

Washington and King are lodged in the Jefferson County Jail in lieu of $180,000 bond.
