NJN/am for Thursday, November 14

Good Thursday morning to you...

Weather: Not quite as cold. It's still rather frigid for this time of year, but it's warming up just a little. Today's high will be around 60, with lows tonight around 40. A front comes through with a chance of showers Friday night, but warmer temperatures.

Worse than expected. Another bad day for Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sibelius, who told reporters during a teleconference Wednesday that a little more than 106,000 people have signed up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act's online marketplaces, and the bug-plagued healthcare.gov federal site had only about 27,000 sign-ups – roughly a fifth of what the Obama administration had set as a goal for this stage in the new program. National Journal also reported that a bit under 400,000 had also used the site to determine that they were eligible for Medicaid.

Angels Yell Roll Tide.” You all remember Hunter Alexander, the youngster from the Hayden area who succumbed to a rare form of brain cancer last year after a lengthy battle. Now Hunter's legacy, along with that of fellow Alabama Crimson Tide fan Ryan Kitchens, is detailed in a book titled “Angels Yell Roll Tide,” written by Darla Hall. Proceeds from the book's sales go to various children's causes, including Children's of Alabama. There's more information here.

Sports: In-famous Jameis. Florida State has confirmed that Jameis Winston, the freshman quarterback and Hueytown native who's on many Heisman Trophy candidate lists, is being investigated by police in Tallahassee for possible charges of felony sexual assault. The confirmation came after a report by the investigate website TMZ.com, which said that a report was filed by a woman last December. Winston was not named in the complaint, but TMZ said sources confirmed Winston was the subject of the investigation, which remains open... Basketball: Looking forward to tonight's scheduled Gardendale season opener at Pleasant Grove? Don't make the trip; the game has been postponed because the Spartans are still involved in football playoffs. No makeup date has been set. Locust Fork opens its season tonight as the Hornets host Briarwood Christian.
