GARDENDALE — The city's newest fire station is now open for business.
The Gardendale Fire Department's second station was opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday morning, with Chief Clint Doss doing the honors as Mayor Othell Phillips and Gardendale Chamber of Commerce director Amy Donald held the ceremonial ribbon.
The new station is actually two buildings. The first is a newly-built structure with two bays for fire engines, and room for equipment and maintenance as well. The second is the former Fields home next door, which now houses as kitchen and sleeping quarters for crews, plus office space. The two buildings are connected by raised walkways, one of which is covered.
The new station is located on Fieldstown Road at Phillips Lane. Doss said that the new facility would greatly reduce response times for residents in the western part of the city.
