Weather: Sunny and chilly. Highs today will struggle to get out of the 40s, with lows tonight around freezing as clouds move in. Thursday will see afternoon scattered showers with highs near 60.
Kidnapping details released. Fultondale Police aren’t telling many of the details of last Thursday’s kidnapping attempt in a grocery store parking lot, but they have said that Bruce Edwin Barton tried to abduct a small girl. Barton was scared away and arrested by Gardendale police about three miles away. Police say that Barton had a relative who is working on the nearby Interstate 22 construction project, are checking around other area law enforcement agencies to see if there are other incidents that are similar to this one.
Bodies found at fire site. Birmingham fire investigators have found three bodies in the rubble of an abandoned building on 20th Street near UAB Monday night. The building was destroyed in the three-alarm blaze, and the bodies were found Tuesday as workers tore down two still-standing chimneys. Investigators are still combing through the rubble.
Sports: Jordan remains undefeated. The Blue Devils took both halves of a home doubleheader over Springville on Tuesday. Sam Blair had an inside-the-park home run plus a triple in the second game, and Garrett Suchey smashed a conventional homer. Jordan has won its first four games over two days… College baseball: It was a homecoming of sorts for two former Jordan players, as Haylie McCleney and Danae Hays and their top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide played before an overflow crowd at UAB on Tuesday night. The Tide won 8-4, with pitcher Jackie Traina smashing a three-run homer well over the tall netting in left field in the first inning. That shot scored McCleney, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, scored twice and stole a base. She appeared to have stolen another, but was called out for leaving base too early. Hays was 0-for-2, but drew a walk and was hit by a pitch. Anna Kimbrell accounted for all of the Blazers’ scoring with a grand slam in the fourth. The crowd had almost twice as many fans in Bama crimson as it did UAB green — and more than a few Tide fans were also sporting Jordan blue, including coach Shawn Maze.
