GARDENDALE —
Starting soon, drivers will need to slow it down on Fieldstown Road in Gardendale.
The Gardendale City Council on Monday lowered the speed limit on Fieldstown from 45 to 35 miles per hour.
City Council President Stan Hogeland said the main purpose of lowering the limit was to reduce the number of traffic accidents at Fieldstown Road and West Shugart Ridge Road, which is right across Fieldstown from Cracker Barrel.
“There have been several accidents at that intersection in the last 18 months,” Hogeland said. “We needed to do something to slow people down through there.”
Hogeland said lowering the speed limit was partly in response to a resident who lives on West Shugart Ridge Road, who asked the city council a few weeks ago to do something about wrecks at the intersection.
“If we can get people to drive 10 miles an hour slower, it will help a lot,” Hogeland said.
Monday’s vote reverses a 2009 decision by the city council to raise the speed limit on Fieldstown Road from 35 to 45 miles per hour.
In other business, the council:
• granted a one-year rezoning extension for McAdam Properties, which is still planning to build a retail center on Fieldstown Road between Waffle House and The Plaza. One business has already signed a lease to locate to the site.
• heard the first reading of an ordinance to rezone 529 King Road from a community business district (C-2) to a single-family residential district (R-1). A public hearing on the rezoning is May 6.
• promoted Dale Hyche to parks and recreation superintendent, following the retirement of Stan Hogeland
• fixed the cost of demolition of buildings found to be a public nuisance and assessing the costs to the owners.
