NJN/am for Wednesday, August 14

It’s Wednesday all over again…

Weather: More of the same. The front that came down from the north yesterday has stalled out right over the I-20 corridor, so we maintain a chance of rain yet again today. It will be slightly cooler with highs in the lower 80s and nighttime lows in the middle 60s. Rain chances are 40 percent today (mainly after 10 a.m.), and 20 percent tonight. Better chances of rain come on Thursday.

Airplane crash near BHM. An Airbus A300 UPS cargo plane crashed just before 5 a.m. this morning on approach to Birmingham Shuttlesworth Airport, near Airport Road in Tarrant. The flight was returning to Birmingham after making its nightly run to the UPS Worldport sorting facility in Louisville, Ky. Early reports have two deaths, both of them crew members with no injuries on the ground. Roads on the north side of the airport are closed this morning; if you have a flight out of BHM this morning, check with your airline for delays or cancellation before leaving; no delays are reported so far.

Lawsuit tossed. A Jefferson Circuit Court judge has granted a summary judgment motion by the city of Fultondale, effectively throwing out a lawsuit filed by Home Field Sports Grill owner John Douglas. Judge Tom King ruled that Douglas had not exhausted all avenues of appeal through the city’s zoning adjustments system over the ruling that Home Field was damaged more than 50 percent by the April 2011 tornado, and would therefore have to be rebuilt to conform to current zoning laws. It is the latest round in a long-running battle between Douglas and the city over the fate of the former bar and restaurant.

Another robbery near drag strip. On the heels of a robbery last weekend, in which the victim was locked in a shed for almost two full days, comes word of another robbery that took place a week ago Monday. This time a woman was driving on Republic Road when a robber blocked her near Brackett Loop Road and demanded her purse, which she gave up. The suspect was later caught on video using the victim’s credit card at a sporting-goods store at Five Points West; you can see a photo of him in this story. Both these robberies took place just west of Lassiter Mountain Dragway, near the Watson community.

Sports: Braves win, Barons slumping. Chris Johnson’s two-run homer was the difference Tuesday night as the Braves downed Philadelphia 3-1. Pitcher Kris Medlen won his fourth straight start, striking out five while allowing five hits over seven innings. Craig Kimbrel logged his 37th save. Elsewhere, the Barons continue their August swoon, as they opened a five-game series at Jacksonville with a 4-1 loss.
