NJN/am for Friday, May 17

It’s Friday, and it's the last weekend of high school sports for this school year…

Weather: Scattered storms. There’s a 50-50 chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms today with a high near 80. More scattered showers for tonight, with a low in the upper 60s. Rain tapers off as the weekend wears on, and clear skies return on Monday.

More problems for IRS. Fox News reported Thursday that the woman who was in charge with the Internal Revenue Service unit that targeted Tea Party organizations is now the head of the office that oversee IRS enforcement of Obamacare. Shelly Hall Ingram ran the division which determined whether applicants should be given tax-exempt status from 2009- to 2012. The news brought more protest from Republicans, including some senators who called for the IRS to be removed from enforcing the Affordable Health Care Act. It’s all part of the latest item in the three scandals currently ensnaring the Obama administration: the IRS affair, the handling of attacks on the diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya and the seizure of Associated Press journalists’ phone records by the Justice Department.

Sports: Ouch. Corner High’s softball team seemed to be rolling along through the post-season, then it hit two big obstacles, forcing the Yellow Jackets out of the AHSAA Class 4A state tournament after a 14-4, five-inning loss to Oak Grove. At noon today, Hayden starts its effort to win the Class 5A title as the Wildcats take on Shelby County… Football: Spring fling. The Keith Register era at Hayden got off to a good (though unofficial) start Thursday as the Wildcats came from behind to defeat Susan Moore 24-21 in the Blount County Jamboree at Locust Fork. Tonight, the Hornets host J.B. Pennington at about 7 p.m. … Soccer: End it like Beckham. The superstar forward for several top teams, including Manchester United and the Los Angeles Galaxy, is calling it quits. David Beckham announced that he is retiring from play at the end of the season for his current club, Paris-St. Germain in France’s top-level league. Beckham was on championship teams in four different countries: England with Man-U, France with PSG last month, Spain with Real Madrid, and the U.S. with the Galaxy. The announcement comes on the heels of the last game in the storied career of manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who helmed United for a quarter century with 13 English Premier League titles… NASCAR: Dick Trickle dies. The longtime journeyman driver who was more famous for his quirky name, short-track success and good-ol’-boy personality, was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Thursday in a Charlotte-area cemetery. Trickle was 71.
