It's Friday, and let's head for the weekend...

Weather: Maybe some rain. But the chances are only 20 percent that you will see a scattered shower this afternoon. Highs will reach 80 degrees, with nighttime lows near 60. That will pretty much be the story through the weekend.

And the new superintendent is... Dr. Steven Nowlin, the current superintendent of the Lee County Schools in Opelika. Nowlin was chosen among three finalists by the Jefferson County Board of Education in a special meeting Thursday afternoon, and was approved on a 4-1 vote. Nowlin will take over for the retiring Dr. Phil Hammonds, who will leave the post early next year after nine years of service.

The debate in Danville goes to…. No one, although some pundits might have given the victory to moderator Martha Raddatz, just for her dogged efforts to keep Vice President Joe Biden from rambling all over and to press GOP nominee Paul Ryan for specifics on his budget plans. Otherwise, opinions of Thursday’s clash at Kentucky’s Centre College largely fell along ideological lines. Meanwhile, Republican Mitt Romney continues to edge ahead of President Barack Obama in most opinion polls, in particular in the key battleground state of Florida, where Romney’s debate victory swung polling by as much as 12 percentage points in his favor.

Sports: Stewart makes a statement. Fultondale won both a football game and a track meet Thursday night, as they won 59-36 at Vincent in a game shown live on WABM-68 television. ArDarius Stewart scored five rushing touchdowns and threw a pass for another, as well as grabbing an interception in the end zone to squelch a Yellow Jackets drive. His brother, Jared, also had an interception. The win put the Wildcats in charge of their own destiny for the post-season… Meanwhile, the rest of our local teams take to the field tonight, with the NJN Big Game featuring Hayden at Mortimer Jordan topping the list. The Blue Devils can virtually assure themselves a playoff berth with a win, while the Wildcats are just hoping to salvage some pride. Gardendale faces a must-win game at Shades Valley… NASCAR: Dale Earnhardt Jr. will miss the next two races and effectively take himself out of the Chase for the Sprint Cup, after suffering a concussion in a last-lap crash at Talladega on Sunday. Earnhardt did not have symptoms until two days later, and a check-up confirmed the suspicions… Baseball: San Francisco pulled off an unlikely National League Division Series victory, scoring six runs in the top of the fifth thanks in part to a Buster Posey grand slam for a 6-4 win at Cincinnati. The Giants came back from losing the first two games to take a 3-2 decision and move into the NL Championship Series.
