NJN/am for Tuesday, November 13

Good Tuesday morning to you…

Weather: Frozen, for now. You may be seeing freezing temperatures or lower as you head out this morning but it will warm up during the day as the sun comes out. Highs today will top out in the upper 50s, perhaps 60. More of the same tonight, with freezing temps possible, the sunny Wednesday with highs in the lower 60s.

“There’s a lot more here than meets the eye.” Those words came from Paul Krantz, the father of Paula Broadwell, who was identified as the mistress of CIA Director David Petraeus. Krantz told the New York Daily News that he believes his daughter is the victim of character assassination, and the story is cover for a bigger scandal. Petraeus resigned after admitting an extramarital affair with Broadwell, who has since been accused of sending threatening emails to another woman who was a friend of Petraeus and his wife. One consequence of the resignation is that Petraeus will not appear before a Congressional committee this week to discuss the attack on the consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in which the U.S. ambassador and three others died.

Veterans honored by thousands. Birmingham’s annual Veterans Day Parade, the nation’s largest and oldest, saw thousands of spectators honor those who served our country in time of war. But perhaps the most remarkable vets to appear were two 86-year-old sailors, Darrell Roberts and Thurman Ryan. The World War II seamen both marched the parade on foot, with no assistance and no ride in a car — “That’s for old folks,” Ryan told a Fox-6 News reporter.

Sports: Overtime, but not much. Pittsburgh linebacker Lawrence Timmons intercepted a Matt Cassel pass on the second play of overtime, setting up a 23-yard field goal by Shaun Suisham that gave the Steelers a 16-13 win over Kansas City on Monday Night Football. The victory came at a price, though, as Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger left the game in the third quarter when he hurt his shoulder after a sack… NBA: Something funny happened while Phil Jackson was taking a few days to decide if he wanted to return to coaching the Los Angeles Lakers — the team hired someone else instead. Mike D'Antoni was hired on Sunday, a day before Jackson was to give GM Mitch Kupchak and executive VP Jim Buss his decision. Jackson won five championships as Lakers coach, and 11 overall including his tenure with Chicago… NASCAR: The post-race brawl that erupted Sunday between the crews for Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer, which resulted from Gordon putting Bowyer into the wall late in the race at Phoenix, resulted in a loss of 25 points and $100,000, plus probation for the rest of the year. The wreck knocked Bowyer out of mathematical possibilities that he could catch points leader Brad Keselowski in this week’s season finale at Homestead. (Keselowski was fined $25,000 in an unrelated incident for having his cell phone with him in the race; NASCAR considers those “on-board computers.”)
