It’s Thursday…
Weather: Frosty. The fog will burn off and skies will by sunny with highs in the lower 60s. Patchy frost is possible again tonight with lows in the middle 30s. Friday and the weekend looks warmer, with highs in the 70s.
Drop like it’s hot. Financial markets did not take the news of President Obama’s re-election well. Wall Street sank like a rock after the opening bell Wednesday, and the Dow Jones average was off by as much as 350 points before bouncing off its lows. The Dow was down 313 points by the closing bell, and the Nasdaq dropped more than 70 points. The broader S&P 500 index fell by more than two percent as well. Futures going into today’s trading indicated a flat opening.
He’d like to attend the swearing-in, but… Charles Beasley was elected to a seat on the Bibb County Commission on Tuesday, but there is a small problem — he’s deceased. Beasley died on Oct. 12, too late for his name to be removed from the Republican ballot, but he still was elected to a seat by 59 votes over incumbent Democrat Walter Sansing. It was Sansing who previously ousted Beasley from that same seat in 2008. Gov. Robert Bentley will appoint a replacement.
Sports: A national title is in sight. Tabernacle Christian’s 8-man football team can win their first ever National Association of Christian Athletes Division II championship on Friday, if they defeat the Carolina Wildcats home-school team. The Torches advanced with a 60-20 win over Fountain (S.C.) Hill Christian 20-20 on Wednesday morning at the tournament in Dayton, Tenn. Hope Christian School, the home school team based in Pelham which handed the Torches their only loss of the past two seasons, plays for the Division I title on Friday as well… Bass fishing: The Bassmaster Classic is apparently returning to Birmingham in 2014, according to several online reports. Gov. Bentley and Birmingham Mayor William Bell are expected to announce the tournament’s return in a press conference this morning. The city last hosted the world’s most prestigious fishing tournament in 2010, when Kevin VanDam won the title. The tournament’s parent company has since moved its headquarters to Birmingham.
