Weather: Very nice today. It will be sunny today, with highs reaching the middle 70s. Lows tonight will be in the upper 40s, but with no wind. Highs Saturday could hit 80, but scattered storms may roll in late Saturday night. More rain is possible Sunday, then we clear off and cool off again to start the work week.
The new man in charge is… a woman. Judy Bonner was unanimously elected by the University of Alabama Board of Trustees to be the school’s next president. Bonner replaced Guy Bailey, who held the position for less than four months before resigning Wednesday to care for his critically-ill wife. Bonner is the first woman to serve as president in the school’s history; she was previously the vice president and provost. She had served as interim president before Bailey arrived, after then=president Robert Witt moved up to become chancellor of the UA system.
Thanks, but go away. Huntsville television station WAFF reports that utility crews from electric companies in Decatur and Huntsville were turned away from helping crews in storm-ravaged New Jersey. The reason: the Alabama crews are not union members, and Jersey law supposedly prevented it. The Alabama crews will now head to New York, where no such prohibitions exist… Meanwhile, the situation is worsening for the New York area after the onslaught of Hurricane Sandy. Mass transit has still not returned to full capacity, but lines to buy gasoline stretch for miles and supplies are running out. A video crew from a local television station showed residents of Lower Manhattan resorting to dumpster diving, picking through what had been thrown out by a supermarket because power was still out and stores remain closed.
Sports: Torches go for the title again. Tabernacle Christian plays in its third straight Christian Football Association 8-man championship game tonight, as they travel to Cottondale to play at Tuscaloosa Christian. It’s the NJN Big Game for this week. The Torches are the defending champions, but squeaked past the semifinals by just two points last week. Meanwhile, tonight is the tenth and final week of the AHSAA regular season. Gardendale hosts Buckhorn, Parrish comes to Fultondale, Mortimer Jordan hits the road to take No. 1 (Class 4A) Oneonta, Corner is at Sumiton Christian and Hayden hosts Arab… NFL: San Diego ended a three-game losing streak with a 31-13 win over Kansas City on Thursday night. Quarterback Philip Rivers completed 18 out of 20 passes, only the sixth passer in league history to complete 90 percent or more of his throws in a game while attempting at least 20 passes.
