Blount voters cry fraud, say they did not sign petition to legalize alcohol sales

HAYDEN — A petition circulating in Blount County in support of legalizing alcohol sales is stocked with bogus signatures, according to one man whose name appears on the list.

“We’re against it,” said Lanny Sartain of Hayden. “I’m a deacon in my church.”

Sartain’s name appears on a petition reportedly circulated by a group called Blount Countians Supporting the Benefit of Alcohol Sales.

However, multiple people have called the Blount County courthouse and reported that their names appeared on the petition although they did not sign it.

Blount County Probate Judge Chris Green’s office is reportedly gathering the names of people who say they were added to the list fraudulently. Green did not return telephone calls to the North  Jefferson News for this article.

Sartain said that in addition to his name, the names of his wife and two sons also appear on the petition, even though they did not sign it.

Despite the allegations of cheating, the issue will be on the ballot next week, so Blount County voters will have their say on the issue during the Nov. 6 general election.

Supporters of legalizing alcohol sales in Blount County say it will help schools by generating more tax revenue. Some opponents say that legalizing alcohol sales is morally wrong.
