NJN/am for Tuesday, October 23

Hope yours is a terrific Tuesday…

Weather: Superb again. It’s still a very simple forecast — sunny and warm, with highs near 80 and nighttime lows in the middle 50s. This forecast holds through Friday, when a chance of scattered storms shows up.

Another contentious debate. Barack Obama and his election opponent, Gov. Mitt Romney, traded charges and countercharges in their third and last presidential debate in Boca Raton, Fla. Monday night. Obama responded to a Romney comment about a smaller U.S. Navy than in past years by saying, "Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets." Romney was less assertive than in the first two debates, but did chastise Obama for not visiting Israel when he toured other countries in the region on a so-called “apology tour.” Opinion polls still show Romney with a slight lead over Obama, largely on the heels of his consensus victory in the first of the three debates.

Moving job is done. The Gardendale City Hall has moved into its temporary new home, while the old City Hall will soon be torn down. Already, signs announcing the construction of a new CVS drug store at the corner of Main St. and Fieldstown Rd. are up, while the city’s administrative offices are now housed next door in the former Gardendale Civic Center. Meanwhile, the police department has moved into the new Public Safety Center, located in the former Food World on Decatur Highway.

Sports: An historic comeback. St. Louis appeared to have San Francisco put away with a 3-1 lead in the National League Championship Series, but the Giants had another idea. They won their sixth straight elimination game of the post-season — just the second team to ever do so — with a 9-0 drubbing of the Cardinals in a game that ended in driving rain. The Giants open the World Series on Wednesday night at home against Detroit… NFL: Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler was knocked out of the game for a time after a hard sack by Detroit’s Ndamukong Suh, but came back in the second half as the Bears defeated the Lions 13-7 on Monday Night Football. Cutler threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Marshall, and Robbie Gould kicked two field goals… Cross country: The Jefferson County Schools Championship meet steps off at Mortimer Jordan today. The starting gun fires for the girls at 4 p.m. and the boys at 4:35.
