The threat of snow and ice on Wednesday morning has caused Blount County Schools to cancel classes for the day.
Blount County had been scheduled to hold a half day of classes before dismissing for the Thanksgiving break. Instead, students are now off until Monday, Dec. 2.
Jefferson County Schools had always scheduled the holiday break to begin Wednesday, as had private schools who follow the county system's lead.
The forecast on Tuesday calls for the possibility of rain changing to light snow, which may accumulate on grassy areas, especially to the north of metro Birmingham. The bigger threat lies in water that may still be standing on roads and bridges after the roughly three inches of rain that has fallen in the past 36 hours. That water may freeze as the cold front moves through, causing problems with "black ice" that is difficult for motorists to see.
